UK AI Startups on Track for Record $4.4bn Investment in 2024

16/07/2024

The UK's AI startup sector is set to raise $4.4bn (£3.4bn) in venture capital funding this year, as reported by HSBC Innovation Banking UK and Dealroom. AI startups have already secured $2.1bn (£1.6bn) in the first half of 2024, a significant portion of the $9.4bn (£7.2bn) raised by all UK startups.

  • Major Deals: The funding surge is being driven by "megarounds" ($100m-$250m) and "mega+ rounds" (over $250m), with nearly half of second-quarter capital from these deals.
  • Top Performer: Wayve, an autonomous driving AI startup, raised the largest round with $1.05bn Series C.
  • Regional Leaders: Cambridge and Oxford startups also leading in venture capital raised outside London.
  • European Leader: The UK outpaces France and Germany combined in startup investment.
  • Global Standing: The UK ranks third globally in startup investment, behind the US and China.

Peter Kyle MP, Secretary of State for Science, Innovation, and Technology acknowledged the significant investments in startups like Wayve and Monzo despite economic uncertainties. The Labour government has expressed its commitment to fostering a better environment for the tech sector, including recent changes by the Financial Conduct Authority to simplify the listing process in London.
